Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine that acts as a selective antagonist of the histamine H1 receptor, primarily used to treat symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (including pruritus and hives). Fexofenadine is not effective for treating headache; it is an antihistamine used specifically for allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.[1][2] Developed as the active metabolite of the first-generation antihistamine terfenadine, it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 25, 1996, under the brand name Allegra, offering a non-sedating alternative due to its minimal penetration of the blood-brain barrier.
