Verapamil is a non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker medication primarily used to treat hypertension, angina pectoris, and supraventricular tachyarrhythmias such as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT).[1] It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation, reduced cardiac contractility, and slowed heart rate, which decreases the workload on the heart and improves blood flow.[2] Available in oral forms (immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, and capsules) as well as intravenous formulations, it is prescribed under brand names including Calan, Verelan, and Covera-HS, often as monotherapy or in combination with other agents like trandolapril in products such as Tarka.[3]
