Clopidogrel, sold under the brand name Plavix among others, is an antiplatelet medication used to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke in those at high risk. It is also used together with aspirin in heart attacks and following the placement of a coronary artery stent. It is taken by mouth. Its effect starts about two hours after intake and lasts for five days.

Clopidogrel is an oral antiplatelet medication that inhibits platelet aggregation to prevent the formation of blood clots, thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other thrombotic events in at-risk patients.[1] Developed as a second-generation thienopyridine, it acts as a prodrug that requires hepatic activation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, primarily CYP2C19, to irreversibly bind and block the P2Y12 ADP receptor on platelet surfaces, thereby suppressing ADP-induced platelet activation and aggregation.[2] First approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on November 17, 1997, under the brand name Plavix, clopidogrel is available as bisulfate tablets in doses typically ranging from 75 mg daily for maintenance therapy to 300–600 mg loading doses for acute settings.[3]
