Povidone-iodine (PVP-I), also known as iodopovidone, is an antiseptic used for skin disinfection before and after surgery. It may be used both to disinfect the hands of healthcare providers and the skin of the person they are caring for. It may also be used for minor wounds. It may be applied to the skin as a liquid, an ointment or a powder.

Povidone-iodine
Povidone-iodine is a stable chemical complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone, PVP) and elemental iodine, functioning as a broad-spectrum topical antiseptic.[1] The complex, with the molecular formula (C₆H₉NO)_x · xI₂, contains 9.0%–12.0% available iodine on a dry basis and releases free iodine gradually to exert microbicidal effects by oxidizing microbial proteins, enzymes, and nucleic acids, thereby disrupting cell membranes and metabolic processes.[1] This iodophore formulation enhances the solubility and sustained release of iodine compared to elemental iodine alone, reducing toxicity while maintaining efficacy against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.[1] Discovered in 1955 by H. A. Shelanski and M. V. Shelanski at the Industrial Toxicology Laboratories in Philadelphia, it was introduced into clinical use in 1956 and is commonly marketed under the brand name Betadine.[1][2]
