Sulfasalazine, sold under the brand name Azulfidine among others, is a medication used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. It is considered by some to be a first-line treatment in rheumatoid arthritis. It is taken by mouth or can be administered rectally.

Sulfasalazine is a synthetic medication that combines a sulfonamide antibiotic (sulfapyridine) with an anti-inflammatory salicylate (5-aminosalicylic acid, or mesalamine), functioning as a prodrug primarily activated in the colon to exert its therapeutic effects.[1] It is approved for the treatment and maintenance of remission in mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, as well as for managing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD).[2][3]
