Cefuroxime is a semisynthetic, second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic characterized by its broad-spectrum activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.[1][2] It belongs to the class of beta-lactam antibiotics and is particularly noted for its resistance to hydrolysis by beta-lactamases produced by many common pathogens, allowing it to remain effective where first-generation cephalosporins may fail.[3][4] Cefuroxime works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting cell wall synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death.[5]
