Cetirizine is a second-generation peripherally selective antihistamine used to treat allergic rhinitis, dermatitis, urticaria (hives), and runny nose. It is taken by mouth. Effects generally begin within thirty minutes and last for about a day. The degree of benefit is similar to other antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, which is a first-generation antihistamine.

Cetirizine (/sɛˈtɪrɪziːn/ se-TIR-a-zeen) is a second-generation H1 antihistamine medication that selectively blocks histamine H1 receptors to alleviate symptoms of allergic conditions such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat, as well as treating chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) in adults and children aged 6 months and older.[1][2] It is the active metabolite of hydroxyzine and is characterized by minimal penetration into the central nervous system, resulting in reduced sedation compared to first-generation antihistamines, with a half-life of approximately 8.3 hours and primary excretion via urine.[1][3]
