Pilocarpine is a naturally occurring imidazole alkaloid derived from the leaves of Pilocarpus jaborandi, a plant in the Rutaceae family native to South America.[1][2] First isolated in 1874, it functions as a muscarinic cholinergic agonist that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system by mimicking the action of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors.[3][4]
