Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum synthetic imidazole antifungal agent that inhibits fungal growth by disrupting cell membrane integrity, primarily through blocking ergosterol biosynthesis, a key component of the fungal cell membrane.[1] Developed in 1969 by Bayer AG in Germany as one of the first topical imidazoles (originally known as BAY b 5097), it has become a cornerstone treatment for superficial fungal infections.[2][3] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines and available as a generic medication.[4]
