Prednisolone is a corticosteroid, a steroid hormone used to treat certain types of allergies, inflammatory conditions, autoimmune disorders, and cancers, electrolyte imbalances, and skin conditions. Some of these conditions include adrenocortical insufficiency, high blood calcium, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatitis, eye inflammation, asthma, multiple sclerosis, and phimosis. It can be taken by mouth, injected into a vein, used topically as a skin cream, or as eye drops.

Prednisolone, sold under the brand name Prednezol among others, is a synthetic glucocorticoid and corticosteroid medication that mimics the effects of the naturally occurring hormone cortisol, primarily used for its potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties to treat a wide range of inflammatory, allergic, and autoimmune conditions.[1] It works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors in cells, which inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and prostaglandins, thereby reducing swelling, redness, itching, and immune system overactivity.[2] Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1955, prednisolone is available in various oral forms including tablets, syrups, and solutions, as well as topical and ophthalmic preparations, and is typically prescribed for short-term use to minimize risks, though long-term therapy requires careful monitoring.[1]
