Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide and acaricide with the chemical formula C21H20Cl2O3, structurally analogous to natural pyrethrins derived from chrysanthemum flowers.[1] It appears as a yellow to light orange-brown, low-melting solid or viscous liquid and functions by disrupting sodium ion channels in insect nerve cells, leading to paralysis and death.[2] Developed as a more stable alternative to pyrethrins, permethrin exhibits broad-spectrum activity against arthropods including mosquitoes, ticks, lice, and mites, while demonstrating relatively low acute toxicity to mammals due to rapid metabolism by esterase enzymes and differences in body temperature affecting its potency.[3]
