Tinidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole derivative that functions as a broad-spectrum antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent, primarily used to treat infections caused by protozoa such as Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica, as well as bacterial vaginosis in adult women.[1] Chemically known as 1-[2-(ethylsulfonyl)ethyl]-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole with a molecular weight of 247.27, it is administered orally in tablet form, typically as 250 mg or 500 mg doses, and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2004 for these indications, though it had been in use internationally prior to that.[1][2]
