Methylprednisolone, sold under the brand name Medrol among others, is a synthetic glucocorticoid, primarily prescribed for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It is either used at low doses for chronic illnesses or used at high doses during acute flares. Methylprednisolone and its derivatives can be administered orally or parenterally.

Methylprednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid and intermediate-acting corticosteroid medication that exerts potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by mimicking the actions of natural adrenal hormones.[1] It is approximately five times more potent than hydrocortisone with minimal mineralocorticoid activity, making it suitable for systemic use in managing various inflammatory and immune-mediated disorders.[1] Developed as an adrenocortical steroid, it binds to glucocorticoid receptors to inhibit proinflammatory pathways, such as NF-κB signaling, and suppresses the production of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins.[1]
