Metronidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent widely used to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, certain protozoa, and microaerophilic bacteria.[1] It was developed by the French pharmaceutical company Rhône-Poulenc and first introduced for clinical use in France in 1960, with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval granted in 1963 under the brand name Flagyl.[2][3]
