Meropenem, sold under the brand name Merrem among others, is an intravenous carbapenem antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Some of these include meningitis, intra-abdominal infection, pneumonia, sepsis, and anthrax.

Meropenem
Meropenem is a synthetic, broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, including complicated skin and skin structure infections and bacterial meningitis in pediatric patients aged 3 months and older, as well as intra-abdominal infections (including in neonates under 3 months).[1] It exerts bactericidal activity by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, thereby inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and leading to cell death; it is particularly stable against many β-lactamases produced by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.[2][1] Administered intravenously, meropenem achieves peak plasma concentrations of approximately 23 mcg/mL after a 500 mg dose and 49 mcg/mL after a 1 g dose over a 30-minute infusion, with a half-life of about 1 hour in adults with normal renal function, and is primarily excreted unchanged in the urine.[1]
