Artemether is a semisynthetic antimalarial drug derived from artemisinin, the active compound isolated from the plant Artemisia annua (sweet wormwood).[1] It is primarily indicated for the treatment of severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, administered as an intramuscular injection (3.2 mg/kg loading dose followed by 1.6 mg/kg daily) when intravenous artesunate is unavailable, and is recommended by the World Health Organization as an alternative parenteral therapy to rapidly reduce parasite load before transitioning to oral artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT).[2][3] Artemether is also used orally in fixed-dose combinations, such as with lumefantrine, for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria in adults and children weighing over 5 kg.[4]
