Enoxaparin sodium is a low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) anticoagulant medication derived from unfractionated heparin, characterized by a mean molecular weight of 4,000 to 5,000 Daltons and an anti-factor Xa to anti-factor IIa activity ratio of approximately 2:1 to 4:1.[1] It functions as an indirect anticoagulant by binding to antithrombin III, primarily enhancing the inhibition of factor Xa while exerting less effect on thrombin (factor IIa) compared to unfractionated heparin, thereby providing antithrombotic effects with a more predictable pharmacokinetic profile.[2] First approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 under the brand name Lovenox and available in generic forms since 2010, enoxaparin sodium is administered via subcutaneous injection (with about 90% bioavailability) or intravenous route and is widely used for prophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism.[1][3]
