Empagliflozin, sold under the brand name Jardiance, among others, is an antidiabetic medication used to improve glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes and/or for patients with established heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Empagliflozin is an oral medication classified as a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus by improving glycemic control as an adjunct to diet and exercise in adults and pediatric patients aged 10 years and older.[1] It is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure (with reduced or preserved ejection fraction) in adults with heart failure, as well as to lower the risk of sustained decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression.[2] Additionally, in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, empagliflozin reduces the risk of cardiovascular death.[2] Marketed under the brand name Jardiance by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company, it was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on August 1, 2014.[3]
