Levofloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic of the third-generation quinolone class, primarily used to treat bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial DNA replication.[1] It is the pure levo-(S)-enantiomer of the racemic drug ofloxacin, with the chemical formula C₁₈H₂₀FN₃O₄, and exhibits enhanced potency compared to its parent compound due to its stereospecific activity.[2] Developed by Daiichi Sankyo and patented in 1987, levofloxacin received initial FDA approval in 1996 under the brand name Levaquin for oral and intravenous administration.[1][3]
