Fluoxetine hydrochloride, sold under the brand name Prozac among others, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant medication primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.[1] Developed by Eli Lilly and Company, it was invented in 1972 and received FDA approval in December 1987 as the first SSRI marketed in the United States, offering a safer alternative to earlier tricyclic antidepressants due to lower toxicity in overdose and fewer anticholinergic side effects.[2][3] Its mechanism of action involves blocking the serotonin transporter to inhibit reuptake of serotonin into presynaptic neurons, thereby increasing extracellular serotonin concentrations in the central nervous system, though the precise therapeutic effects remain linked presumptively to this serotonergic modulation.[4][5]
