Filgrastim is a recombinant methionyl human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) produced via recombinant DNA technology in Escherichia coli.[1] Marketed by Amgen under the brand name Neupogen, it functions as a hematopoietic growth factor that binds to specific cell surface receptors on hematopoietic cells, thereby stimulating the proliferation, differentiation, and maturation of neutrophils from myeloid committed progenitor cells.[2] Originally developed by Amgen in the 1980s following the identification of endogenous G-CSF, filgrastim entered clinical trials in 1987 and received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1991 as the first commercially available G-CSF therapeutic.[3][4]
