Apixaban, sold under the brand name Eliquis among others, is an anticoagulant medication used to treat and prevent blood clots and to prevent stroke in people with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation through directly inhibiting factor Xa. It is used as an alternative to warfarin to prevent blood clots following hip or knee replacement and in those with a history of prior clots and does not require monitoring by blood tests or dietary restrictions. It is taken by mouth.

Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that selectively inhibits factor Xa, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade, thereby reducing thrombin generation and thrombus formation independent of antithrombin.[1] Marketed as Eliquis, it is indicated for reducing the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, treating deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and reducing the risk of recurrent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism following initial therapy.[2] Developed originally by Bristol-Myers Squibb and advanced through a 2007 collaboration with Pfizer for global development and commercialization, apixaban received FDA approval in 2012 based on pivotal trials demonstrating superior efficacy and safety over vitamin K antagonists like warfarin.[3]
