Glycerol, also known as glycerin, glycerine or propane-1,2,3-triol, and in Arabic الكلسرين (al-kalsirin), الجلسرين (al-jalsirin), or الجليسرين (al-jaliserin), is a trihydric alcohol with the molecular formula C₃H₈O₃ consisting of a propane chain bearing three hydroxyl groups. Glycerol is the scientific or IUPAC name for the pure compound propane-1,2,3-triol (C₃H₈O₃); glycerin is the common commercial name, typically referring to a version with at least 95% purity. In everyday use, especially in cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals, the terms are often used synonymously. A common misspelling is "glycarine."
