Nitroglycerin, also known as glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), is a vasodilator used for heart failure, high blood pressure, anal fissures, painful periods, treating the pain from esophageal spasm, and to treat and prevent chest pain caused by decreased blood flow to the heart (angina) or due to the recreational use of cocaine. This includes chest pain from a heart attack. It is taken by mouth, under the tongue, applied to the skin by cream or a patch, as a spray, or by injection into a vein.

Nitroglycerin, also known as glyceryl trinitrate, is an organic nitrate medication primarily used as a vasodilator to relieve and prevent episodes of angina pectoris (chest pain) in patients with coronary artery disease.[1] It works by relaxing blood vessels, which increases blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart while reducing the heart's workload and oxygen demand.[2] Available in various forms including sublingual tablets, sprays, transdermal patches, intravenous infusions, and ointments, it is FDA-approved for the acute relief and prophylaxis of angina attacks.[1] Off-label uses include management of hypertensive emergencies, esophageal spasms, and anal fissures.[1]
